Gerhard Hotter
Gerhard Hotter is a German artist born in 1954 in Nuremberg. He lives and works between Nuremberg and Paris. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg under the direction of Professor Guenter Dollhopf from 1976 to 1981, his artistic career began in 1973 in an art gallery in Germany. In 1993, he exhibited for the first time in France at the Maison de l’Europe in Paris. Since then, he has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, both in Germany and internationally. His works are held in prestigious private collections as well as in museums.
Gerhard Hotter’s art focuses on the exploration of mathematical structures and their artistic potential, thus aligning with the concrete art movement. The artist utilizes the numerical sequence of Langford, a mathematical structure developed by the Scottish physicist Dudley Langford (born in 1905), which he applies to his creations to develop forms and geometric compositions where colors and configurations vary according to rational principles. The Langford sequences he uses, mainly Langford-8, form the basis of his compositions, while allowing the artist free interpretation through the choice of colors and the arrangement of forms.
Through his works, Hotter seeks an interaction between mathematical rigor and aesthetic perception. His creations, which have evolved over time, include relief creations and installations that integrate the dynamics of light and space. His explorations have also led to acoustic realizations, thus expanding his field of expression beyond the visual.
