Le songe d’une nuit d’hiver
16.02.2024 - 16.03.2024

Fathiya Tahiri’s captivating exhibition “Le songe d’une nuit d’hiver” plunges us into the rich and singular universe of a leading Moroccan artist. Fathiya Tahiri stands out for her artistic generosity, versatility and moving sincerity. Refusing to confine herself to a single medium, she tirelessly explores new horizons, constantly pushing back the boundaries of her expression.

Her work, though polymorphous and unclassifiable, is in the tradition of Expressionism, an artistic movement that privileges subjectivity and the distortion of reality to elicit emotional reactions in the viewer. Fathiya Tahiri finds a particular filiation with lyrical abstraction, characterized by free, intuitive expression and intense sensory exploration.

The exhibition presents a significant evolution in the artist’s work, notably with her recent foray into expressionist figuration.

The portraits reveal faces imbued with Freudian matierism, revealing the deepest layers of human feelings and contradictions. The sculptures, distorted to the point of absurdity, evoke hybrid forms and insectoid matriarchs, recalling the unshakeable power of motherhood.

Fathiya Tahiri draws us into waking dreams, where reality and fantasy blend harmoniously. Her works, whether paintings or sculptures, reveal a world where dreams become the very stuff of tales and legends. Through her skilful appropriation of artistic references, Fathiya Tahiri emerges as a free, African woman, vibrant with color, emotion and discovery. The exhibition offers a fascinating plunge into the creative universe of an artist who, far from allowing herself to be trapped in Art History, continues to explore new horizons.

Le songe d’une nuit d’hiver is on view from February 16 to March 16 at La Galerie 38 Casablanca.
